Ian Woosnam: Ryder Cup
built 272 days ago
Ian Woosnam disagrees, saying "For me, the Ryder Cup pressure is more. You don't want to let anybody down." Woosnam never won a singles match in his eight Ryder Cup appearances. "When you're playing for yourself, it's only yourself," Woosnam added. "The way to treat a major is to try to treat it like any other tournament. Jack Nicklaus said that everybody was trying so hard they put too much pressure on themselves."

Ian Woosnam, Captain of the 2006 European Ryder Cup Team, will host a golf competition and clinic with fellow clients of Europe's leading private jet operator, NetJets. The event, taking place on Thursday 3rd August at La Moye Golf Club, St Brelade, will see amateur golfers fly in from Bulgaria, Dublin and London to test their skills against one of Europe's biggest stars.
The son of Joan and Harold, a farmer, Woosnam grew up at St. Martin's, where Shropshire borders Wales, and first played with a sawn-off set of clubs at Llanmynech. He turned professional in 1976 and made three visits to the Qualifying School before establishing himself on The European Tour on which he gained the first of his 29 victories in the Swiss Open in 1982. In 1987 he finished Number One on the Order of Merit and did so again in 1990. He made 17 appearances for Wales in the World Cup, winning in 1987 alongside David Llewellyn.

Woosnam was a member of eight consecutive European Ryder Cup teams from 1983 to 1997. Despite not winning a singles match he accumulated an excellent overall record of 14 wins, 12 losses and 5 halves in 31 matches. He was a vice captain for the 2002 European team and has been elected as captain for 2006. This will be a one-off assignment in the first instance, as Nick Faldo was elected for 2008at the same time.
In addition to being the European team's Vice-Captain for the 2002 Ryder Cup Matches in September, Woosnam has become the fifth all-time leading money winner on the European Tour since turning pro in 1976. He finished in the top twelve of the European Order of Merit for thirteen consecutive years (1982-1994), including a first-place ranking in 1987 and 1990. Woosnam is a former Masters Champion (1991) and 8-time European Ryder Cup team member. Most recently, he won the 2001 Cisco World Match Play Championship and finished third in the 2001 British Open.

Woosnam Ian Woosnam, who led Europe to victory in the recent Ryder Cup, indicated yesterday that he has not ruled out the possibility of applying for a second stint as captain. "Originally, I said that I would do it once and that would be it, but I can see circumstances in which I might allow my name to go forward again," he said.
