Hysterectomies: United States
built 635 days ago
More than 600,000 American women have hysterectomies each year, making it the second most common surgical procedure performed in the United States. A hysterectomy is typically performed as a result of abnormal uterine bleeding and non-cancerous growths of muscle tissue in and around the uterus. It may ... be performed if a woman’s uterus falls from its normal position into or outside of the vagina, or as a life-saving operation for women with certain types of cancer or uterine hemorrhage.

Approximately 20 percent of the 600,000 hysterectomies performed annually in the United States treat menorrhagia. The GYNECARE THERMACHOICE system, which has been used to treat more than 250,000 women worldwide, offers a less invasive option that allows women to preserve their uterus. It is used in a simple outpatient procedure that can be completed in under 30 minutes. Compared with hysteroscopic procedures, uterine balloon therapy is much simpler for a physician to perform.
According to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), the number of hysterectomies performed in the United States peaked in 1975 at 740,000, and has declined since then (1). In 1991, 555,000 hysterectomies were performed (2). Of these, 8,000 cases occurred in Federal hospitals (3).

About 75% of hysterectomies performed in the United States are abdominal hysterectomies. The surgeon makes a four to six inch incision either horizontally across the pubic hair line from hip bone to hip bone or vertically from navel to pubic bone. Horizontal incisions leave a less noticeable scar, but vertical incisions give the surgeon a better view of the abdominal cavity. The blood vessels, fallopian tubes, and ligaments are cut away from the uterus, which is lifted out.

Return to Home/Main Overview Menu Every 10 minutes, 12 hysterectomies are performed in the United States. According to a recent report published by Obstetrics and Gynecology, 9 of them probably didn't meet the guidelines set out by the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists for hysterectomy. How and why is this occurring?
