Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia can ... be a common complication of diabetes. Diabetes occurs when the body cannot use glucose for fuel either because the pancreas is not able to make enough insulin or the insulin that is available is not effective. As a result, glucose builds up in the blood instead of getting into body cells. The aim of treatment in diabetes is to lower high blood sugar levels. To do this, people with diabetes may use insulin or oral drugs, depending on the type of diabetes they have or the severity of their condition. (Refer to the Diabetes protocol for further information.) Using these medications may lower their blood sugar too much, making them hypoglycemic.
Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is a condition in which there is an abnormally low level of glucose (sugar) in your blood. Normally your body keeps blood sugar levels within a narrow range through the coordinated work of several organs and glands and their hormones, primarily insulin and glucagon. But factors such as disease or a poor diet can disrupt the mechanisms that regulate your sugar levels. Too much glucose results in hyperglycemia, one of the major symptoms of diabetes. However, hypoglycemia is most common among people with diabetes, as too much insulin can cause blood sugar levels to fall (an insulin reaction).

Hypoglycemia often has a food sensitivity or food allergy component. Consuming something that the body is sensitive or allergic to can set off a hypoglycemic reaction or make blood sugar levels more irregular.
Hypoglycemia means low blood sugar. It occurs when there is not enough sugar or glucose in the blood. It is ... called insulin shock or insulin reaction. Hypoglycemia is most common in type 1 diabetics, especially diabetics who have tight control of their blood sugar level. People with Type 2 diabetes who take insulin or certain diabetic medications may also have hypoglycemia reactions. People who control their diabetes with diet and exercise rarely have this reaction.
Hypoglycemia literally means "low blood sugar" and is often mistaken for a disease when it is actually a symptom. Ingested carbohydrates (sugars and starches) trigger a release of the hormone insulin from the pancreas. Insulin helps the body turn sugars into energy and stored fats. In some people, the amount of insulin released is too high for the amount of carbohydrates ingested, resulting in too much sugar being burned up too quickly. A net loss of blood sugar results. In hypoglycemia attacks, there is too much insulin and not enough blood sugar, causing fatigue, weakness, loss of consciousness, and even death.
