An image on BME of a hymen piercing, done in Sacha, Brazil Hymen piercings are extraordinarily rare piercings. The hymen is the mucous membrane partially closing the vaginal opening. "Virginity" is generally considered lost when the vagina is penetrated, ripping the hymen. Two photos of [H]ymen piercings have appeared on BME/extreme (one in Brazil, one in Germany), but there are currently no experiences to go with them. Healing times/factors are unknown, as is the practicality of this unusual modification.
Hymen repair... known as a hymenoplasty, is a surgical procedure that restores a woman's hymen or creates a hymen where one was nonexistent. The hymen, a tissue membrane, partially covers or surrounds the vaginal opening as part of the vulva (external genitalia). There is no known anatomical function for the hymen; the significance given to the hymen is a social phenomenon. In some cultures and societies, it is believed that the existence of an intact hymen is proof of a woman's virginity.
The Hymen usually tears posteriorly or posterolaterally into two or more portions. Commonly, rupture of the hymen is accompanied by slight bleeding, which stops spontaneously. Occasionally, a larger vessel can bleed profusely, possibly even leading to shock and requiring a blood transfusion. Even in severe cases, bleeding can usually be controlled by applying direct pressure to the bleeding point. Only very rarely surgical assistance is required.
Hymenotomy occasionally may be indicated in the case of a rigid inelastic hymen, particularly for young female athletes (eg, swimmers, divers, gymnasts, cheerleaders) who are eager to use tampons. A reasonable alternative to surgical correction involves the use of progressive dilation in a motivated young woman. In athletes with a rigid hymen, an evaluation for possible hypoestrogenism associated with vigorous physical activity should be considered; if present, estrogen replacement improves the hymenal characteristics and increases hymenal elasticity.

Putting the scientific facts aside, hymen has gotten its name from the Greek god Hymenaeus. He is believed to be the god of marriages and weddings. If theres an individual that comes to mind when marriages or weddings are referred to, chances are, it is a woman. Every woman cherishes these things, maybe in a number of different ways from one another. But it all boils down to one thing; Marriage and weddings are sacred. This is the reason why the hymen is named after that Greek god Hymenaeus.
Hymenaeus, god of weddings | Athenian red figure pyxis C5th B.C. | University Museum, University of Pennsylvania, Oxford HYMENAIOS (Hymen or Hymenaeus) was the god of weddings, or more specifically of the wedding hymn which was sung by the train of the bride as she was led to the house of the groom. Hymenaios was numbered amongst the Erotes, the youthful gods of love.
