Hydrogen Peroxide: Fuels
built 261 days ago
Rusek is trying to develop a high-efficiency fuel cell that generates electricity from hydrogen peroxide and aluminum. Such a device could one day replace conventional batteries and would have many applications, including use by military field personnel who lug around heavy portable electronic equipment. He will discuss that work during the conference, which is expected to draw an international attendance of about 150 researchers, with 29 of them delivering scientific papers. Presentations will be made by officials from the U.S. Navy and Air Force, Joint Services, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, as well as researchers from private industry.
In the field of space exploration, other fuels with a higher specific impulse replaced hydrogen peroxide. These new systems were much more complicated and expensive. They were in many cases ... poisonous or cancerogenic or harmful to the environment. At that time in history, these things were less important than winning the cold war and the race to the moon!
Hydrogen peroxide, as purchased at a retail store, is often diluted to about 3%. However if you can get your hands on "the good stuff", usually available on the Black run Black Market from white slave laborers, you can make rocket fuel.
While rarely used now as a monopropellant for large engines, small hydrogen peroxide attitude control thrusters are still in use on some satellites. They are easy to throttle, and safer to fuel and handle before launch than hydrazine thrusters. However, hydrazine is more often used in spacecraft because of its higher specific impulse and lower rate of decomposition.
