1. National Hurricane Center -- Storms
   The National Hurricane Center (NHC) warns that Katrina, already a potentially catastrophic hurricane headed for the Northern Gulf Coast, continues to gain strength. Katrina is getting stronger-and bigger. The NHC notes that Katrina is now as strong as Hurricane Camille was in 1969, only larger, and warns that storm surge flooding will be 18-22 feet above normal, with surges to 28 feet in some areas. Although hurricanes rarely sustain these extreme winds for long, the NHC reports no obvious large-scale effects that could cause Katrina to weaken substantially. 2. Hurricane Katrina -- Gulf Coast
   The response of Americans for Hurricane Katrina victims has been amazing. This has brought many people together, espcially those who live in the South. Every year the Gulf Coast in effected by hurricanes, but none have been nearly as bad a Katrina. The Red Cross has done its job and gone far beyond anyones expectations.
3. Hurricane Rita -- Buildings
   GERMANTOWN, Md., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- In anticipation of Hurricane Rita, Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HNS) is pre-positioning satellite terminals and installation teams near areas likely to be affected. This enables HNS to rapidly deploy and provision satellite communications as soon as weather conditions subside. HNS is contacting both current customers and rescue and relief agencies to assess their voice and data communications requirements in the face of this latest hurricane.
4. Rita -- Hurricane Rita
   Following less than a month after Hurricane Katrina devastated large parts of the central Gulf Coast region, Hurricane Rita was the second hurricane of the season to reach Category 5 status (on the Saffir-Simpson scale) in the Gulf of Mexico. This marked the first time on record that two hurricanes reached Category 5 strength in the Gulf of Mexico in the same season. Additionally, it was only the third time that two Category 5 storms formed in the Atlantic Basic in the same year.
5. Hurricane Andrew -- Storm
   No one knew on Saturday, August 22, 1992, that Hurricane Andrew would turn out to be the largest natural disaster in the nation’s history. No one could predict that it would supersede Hurricane Hugo as the costliest disaster ever and cause over five times the damage of that 1989 storm.
6. Google Maps -- Google Earth
   Google Maps has added a saucy new terrain overlay to its already impressive view options. In addition to geographic terrain, this view ... displays buildings in metropolitan areas à la Google Earth. You may also notice that the Hybrid view is now missing from the top row of buttons, but Hybrid view (which displays satellite imagery with street information overlaid) is now the default for Satellite view (though you can toggle the street information).

9. Tornado -- Tornado Alley
   Florida is one and Tornado Alley is the other. Florida has a lot of tornadoes simply because it is home to almost daily thunderstorms. In addition, the Florida peninsula is often impacted by several tropical storms or hurricanes each year. When these tropical systems move ashore, the embedded thunderstorms in the rain bands often produce tornadoes. However, despite the violent nature of a tropical storm, the tornadoes they spawn (some being water spouts) tend to be weaker than those produced by non-tropical thunderstorms.
10. The Weather Channel
    The Weather Channel is investing $50 Million to convert their on-screen graphics to HD and to build a new studio in Atlanta for HD. They will break ground on the new building on May 2nd and it should be completed by January. Interestingly, DirecTV will add the TWC in HD in September, but will upconvert everything until the new studio is complete -- there's another one of those 100 HD channels -- and eventually when all of their programming is HD, they will down-convert the HD feed for those who don't have HD by then. No word on cable carriage yet, but they say they are getting a "positive reaction" from the cable companies.
