GERMANTOWN, Md., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- In anticipation of Hurricane Rita, Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HNS) is pre-positioning satellite terminals and installation teams near areas likely to be affected. This enables HNS to rapidly deploy and provision satellite communications as soon as weather conditions subside. HNS is contacting both current customers and rescue and relief agencies to assess their voice and data communications requirements in the face of this latest hurricane.

Based on the current path of Hurricane Rita and its downgrade to a Category 3, indications are that St. Charles Operations will not sustain significant severe weather. The Maintenance Hurricane Squad will be released at 6:00pm today. All shift personnel are reverting to their normal work schedules at this time. The Hurricane Management Team will meet again tonight. Further communication updates will be made once Hurricane Rita makes landfall or if any other significant changes occur.

In any other hurricane season, Rita might have seemed devastating. It knocked out power for more than 1 million customers, sparked fires across the hurricane zone and swamped Louisiana shoreline towns with a 15-foot storm surge that required daring boat and helicopter rescues of hundreds of people.

A section of 9,764 foot long 4-inch oil pipeline riser segment #5902 broke loose from the Ship Shoal 248D fixed platform during Hurricane Rita. The pipeline was shut in prior to the storm and the subsea safety valve held which limited oil loss to that contained in the damaged segment. Approximately 75 bbl of crude oilwas estimated to have been lost.

Due to pending severe weather associated with Hurricane Rita, San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District will have an early release on Friday, September 23, 2005. Campus principals will notify families by letter of the early closures on Thursday, September 22, 2005.
