Hurricane Emily
built 675 days ago
For days Hurricane Emily threatened the Belizean coastline. Although Emily did not make landfall on Belize, it made significant damage on places like Grenada, Jamaica, and the Yucatan Peninsula, especially in Cozumel and Cancun. Meteorologists had predicted more or less the path of the storm and it had both tourists and residents in its path taking precaution and evacuating to a safer place.

Because Hurricane Emily did not make landfall, North Carolina and Virginia avoided substantial damage. Had Hurricane Emily continued its forward track, it would have caused much greater damage, possibly comparable to that of Hurricane Isabel ten years later. Though its damage was minor, rough seas and wind caused three fatalities, all from drowning.

Hurricane Emily and Luna This unusual high-oblique (from the side) panoramic view of the eye of Hurricane Emily was shot by the crew of the International Space Station while they passed over the southern Gulf of Mexico looking eastward toward the rising moon. The eye appears as a depression in the cloud deck, which stretches out to the horizon and fades into the limb (the bright blue cross-section) of the Earth’s atmosphere. At the time this image was taken, Emily was a strengthening Category 4 hurricane with wind speeds approaching 155 miles per hour. The hurricane was moving west-northwest over the northwest Caribbean Sea about 135 miles southwest of Kingston, Jamaica.
The damage after Hurricane Ivan in 2004 Hurricane Emily has hit the small eastern Carribean island of Grenada. The hurricane, which has been upgraded to Category 2 status, hit the island early this morning and has caused widespread damage. It has been reported that many buildings have lost their roofs and there has been much flooding.

With Hurricane Emily sweeping across Caribbean waters, boaters along the Texas coast may have to start preparing for the worst; last year’s hurricanes caused over $300 million in damages to recreational boats alone. To help owners protect their vessels, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatU.S.) has some free tips and “tools” available.
cEmily27-33.GIF Potential temperature surfaces during two transects of Hurricane Emily between 26 and 33 ks UT. The tropopause height is indicated by white triangles, the ER-2 pressure altitude by the heavy blue trace, the 450 K theta surface by the heavy light yellow trace, and the outside air temperature by the heavy red trace. The time of the eye crossing is indicated below the x-axis (~28.5 ks and 31.5 ks UT).
