Humphrey Bogart had started his own production company a few years before, and he named it after his second best love, his boat. Santana Productions was born and Bogart became the first actor in history to form his own production company. Even though, he finished his contract with Warner Brothers in the 1950's.

By the mid-1950s, Bogart's health was failing. Once, after signing a long-term deal with Warner Bros., Bogart predicted with glee that his teeth and hair would fall out before the contract ended. That sent a fuming Jack Warner to his lawyers.

bogart As the producer of his own company, Santana Pictures, Bogart made Knock on any door (1949), a socially conscious film which took a stand against capital punishment. Then, after two conventional action films, Tokyo Joe (1949) and Chain Lightning (1950),he played the part of a disenchanted Hollywood screenwriter who is subject to attacks of murderous violence in Nicholas Ray's In a Lonely Place (1950). In The Enforcer (1951) he was a district attorney up against Murder Inc. Shot in the semi-documentary style typical of Warners, it became a Film Noir classic, particularly remarkable for the complexity of its editing and its powerful scenes of violence.(Twenty years later it was discovered that the film's direction, credited to Bretaigne Windust, was the work of Raoul Walsh.)
