Humphrey Bogart: Maltese Falcon
built 640 days ago
Bogart finally got a break in 1941 when two of Warner's bigger name actors turned down the role of ex-con Roy Earle in "High Sierra" and Warner reluctantly gave the part to Bogart. The film was a hit, and it led to an explosion in Bogart's career. He followed this film with "The Maltese Falcon" and his Academy Award Nominated performance as Rick Blaine in "Casablanca." Hemingway's "To Have and Have Not" soon followed and was a big success as well. Bogart was now established as one of Hollywood's elite actors and in 1952 Bogart won the Academy Award for his role in "The African Queen."

Not until Bogart's performance as the cold, uncommitted private detective Sam Spade in John Huston's (1906–1987) adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's novel, The Maltese Falcon (1941), did Bogart reveal his potential as a screen personality. His co-starring role with Ingrid Bergman (1915–1982) as Rick Blaine in Michael Curtiz's (1888–1962) war drama Casablanca (1942) added to his legend and led to his first Academy Award nomination. He lost, but the film won Best Picture honors.

With his Sam Spade, Bogart set the screen standard for tough detectives in film noir, piecing together a puzzle of greed, violence and lust in the pursuit of the priceless Maltese Falcon. Its another terrific ensemble movie, with fun performances by Lee Patrick as Bogies gal Friday, Mary Astor as the femme fatale, Peter Lorre as a quirky bad guy, and Sydney Greenstreet as a plumply menacing fortune hunter, but this is Bogarts movie from start to finish.

James Cagney and George Raft had both turned down Bogart's part in High Sierra; Raft didn't want to play a character who died at the end. Now George Raft turned down the male lead in John Huston's directorial debut, The Maltese Falcon... 1941.
