Humphrey Bogart: Father
built 613 days ago
Bogart's father was a successful doctor and his mother, Maud Humphrey, was a very successful commercial illustrator. Indeed, she used a drawing of her baby Humphrey Bogart in a well-known ad campaign for Mellins Baby Food. In her prime, she made over $50,000 a year as an illustrator, a vast sum for a woman to earn in those days. But Maud Humphrey was a very distant woman, her husband was not well-suited to her, and the Bogarts' marriage was a troubled one.

From his father, Bogart inherited a gift for needling people, and a love of fishing and especially sailing. Humphrey was the oldest child of three. Both of Bogart's younger sisters were troubled adults; Kay ("Catty") died at 34 of peritonitis complicated by alcoholism. Frances "Pat" Bogart Rose was tall, shy and sweet, but mentally unstable. Bogart was gentle with her and paid for her care. Other relatives were few and rarely saw the Bogarts.

Bogart learned to play chess as a child from his father, a successful surgeon. The skill came in handy during his early hit-or-miss on Broadway and in Hollywood. When the young actor was short of cash, he hustled chess games.
