Humanism: Humanities
built 656 days ago
Secular Humanism is not the same as the Renaissanace humanism, seen in such men as Erasmus and Leonardo da Vinci, which was in essence, a plea for a rich and robust Christian culture. Nor can it be equated with those who teach the professional field of the humanities; another form it does not take is the spirit of sympathetic concern for others' well being, which is sometimes called humanism.
The social ideal of Humanism is the spread of democratic values resulting in comprehensive social, political and economic democracy. Humanists believe that this can be achieved only with the strength of humanity's own moral and intellectual resources.

Humanism and the humanities disciplines included studies in speaking, grammar, poetry, ethics and history. The humanist preference was to study them as much as possible in their original classical texts (mostly Latin). The more traditional educational approach was that of scholasticism, which concentrates on logic, natural science and metaphysics.
The Humanism in Medicine Award recognizes a medical school faculty physician who exemplifies the qualities of a caring and compassionate mentor in the teaching and advising of medical students. The goal of the award is to emphasize and reinforce among medical school faculty and students the importance of humanistic qualities in physicians, and to enhance interactions between medical school faculty and students. The award is made possible through the generous support of the Pfizer Medical Humanities Initiative.
