Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is a complex endocrine syndrome, which is most commonly known to affect the pediatric population. In children, growth failure is often apparent by the end of the first or second year of life. Infants may experience hypoglycemic seizures or prolonged jaundice, and male infants may suffer from micropenis and undescended testes. One in every 4,000 school-age children is estimated to have GHD.

In the 1940s, Evans and his colleague Choh Hao Li isolated the growth hormone from cattle. Other scientists isolated growth hormones in different animal species. In 1970, Li and other scientists independently synthesized GH using genetic engineering techniques. This led to the first production of genetically engineered human growth hormone in the 1980s by Eli Lilly and Company and Genentech (a bio-research organization).

The major isoform of the human growth hormone is a protein of 191 amino acids and a molecular weight of about 22,000 daltons. The structure includes four helices necessary for functional interaction with the GH receptor. GH is structurally and apparently evolutionarily homologous to prolactin and chorionic somatomammotropin. Despite marked structural similarities between growth hormone from different species, only human and primate growth hormones have significant effects in humans.

Since the introduction of synthetic growth hormone in the late 1980s, a controversy has arisen over efforts to boost the growth rate of children who are on the border between being of regular height and being unusually short. Some children are simply short because their parents are. Many physicians are wary of treating short children who do not have GH deficiency just for cosmetic or social reasons. They believe the children's parents, who are short themselves, are trying to prevent their children from the failures the parents experienced as children and blame on their being short. Also, the long-term effects of such treatments are not known.

It is impossible to catch Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease or any other infection from recombinant human growth hormone because it is not derived from a human or animal source, but from a purified tissue culture. For purposes of this discussion, the term growth hormone, GH or hGH will mean growth hormone made by recombinant DNA technology.
