Human Genome Project: Information
built 395 days ago
This is a highly ambitious, even audacious goal, given that only about 6% of the human genome sequence has been completed ... far (Fig. 2). Sequence completion by the end of 2003is a major challenge, but within reach and well worth the risks and effort. Realizing the goal will require an intense and dedicated effort and a continuation and expansion of the collaborative spirit of the international sequencing community. Only sequence of high accuracy and long-range contiguity will allow a full interpretation of all the information encoded in the human genome. However, in the course of finishing the first human genome sequence by the end of 2003,a "working draft" covering the vast majority of the genome can be produced even sooner, within the next 3years.

Participants in this project explore clinical applications of new genetic biotechnology, and the ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI) of the Human Genome Project. Teachers network with peers and genetic professionals, and dissemninate genetics information to students, colleagues and the public.

As of October, 1997, about 1000 individuals from 50 countries are members of the Human Genome Organization (HUGO), which helps to coordinate international collaboration in the genome project. Information on a specific country's role in HGP can be obtained from HUGO.

The human genome is comprised of about three billion building-blocks or residues. This is a lot of information. If each residue was the equivalent of one byte of computer memory, the sequence of the genome from just one person would fill a respectably large hard disk.

Time will tell whether the human genome is abused in this and other ways. The possibilities are endless. Will it be used, for example, to invade individual privacy through the unauthorized release of sensitive genetic information? Moreover, will man use it to play God through selective breeding or the engineering of desirable traits?
