Human Genome Project: Data
built 389 days ago
By January, 1998, according to the Genome Database (GDB), the public repository for human genome mapping information, over 6000 genes have now been mapped to particular chromosomes. In addition to mapped genes, GDB stores information on genes whose locations have not yet been determined unequivocally.
The draft encompasses 90% of the human genome's euchromatic portion, which contains the most genes. In constructing the working draft, the 16 genome sequencing centers produced over 22.1 billion bases of raw sequence data, comprising overlapping fragments totaling 3.9 billion bases and providing sevenfold coverage (sequenced seven times) of the human genome. Over 30% is high-quality, finished sequence, with eight- to tenfold coverage, 99.99% accuracy, and few gaps. All data are freely available via the Web.
[I]n February 1996, at a meeting in Bermuda, international partners in the genome project agree to formalise the conditions of data access, including release of sequence data into public databases within 24 hours. These came to be known as the ‘Bermuda principles’.
