Human Cloning: Scientists
built 641 days ago
Researchers at the Infertility Clinic at Kyeonghee University in Korea announced that they had successfully cloned a human. Scientists Kim Seung-bo and Lee Bo-yeon took an ovum from a woman, removed its DNA and inserted a somatic cell from the same 30 year old woman. The goal of their research is not to clone humans, but to clone specific, genetically identical organs for human transplant. They did not implant the cell into a human uterus because of ethical considerations. They destroyed it.

Many non-scientists assume that cloning humans will be too difficult and risky a process to attempt on humans. But Silver challenges the “muddled thinking” behind such arguments. Despite early hurdles, experimentation with cloning is moving ahead.

Others around the world - for example the Italian scientist Dr. Severino Antinori - are actively trying to clone a human child. Most scientists strongly disapprove of this work. He has claimed there are mothers pregnant with cloned babies, but again, no evidence has been forthcoming.
The bill forbids scientists from implanting a cloned human embryo into a womb, and ... it bans the production of cloned babies. But the act of cloning — the artificial creation of an organism that is the genetic replica of another — would itself be legal.
