In 1997 Clonaid, a company that billed itself as ‘the first human cloning company’ was founded by the Raelian movement, a sect that believes humans were created by extra-terrestrial beings who had mastered genetic engineering. Clonaid announced the birth of "first human clone" on December 26th 2002. The clone, whom they called Eve, was born after being created by Clonaid using a technique similar to that used to create Dolly the sheep. Clonaid announced a second birth to a Dutch lesbian woman early in January 2003 and a third to a Japanese couple plus two others in late January. All five babies were said to be healthy but there was no independent verification of Clonaid’s claims. Initially promising immediate genetic testing on Eve and others by independent scientists, Clonaid then claimed that lawsuits launched against them made testing impossible because the courts would try to identify the children and take them into care.

The effective and morally acceptable way to prevent human cloning is to forbid its use to make new humans in the first place. The Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2001 (S. 790, H.R. 2505) will achieve this important goal.

Despite the concerns which may be raised by the above applications, any work carried out in the field of human cloning will shed great light on the processes of human development and the role genetics plays in this development. Thus, from a purely scientific standpoint, the new insights gained into the very nature of life itself may be invaluable. This new knowledge, in turn, is likely to lead to a new understanding of diseases and disabilities of many kinds and perhaps ... their cures. It may then be possible to control, if not eradicate altogether, many of the health concerns which currently occupy the human species. Any program which may result in the amelioration of human pain and suffering caries with it obvious benefits and thus its implementation cannot be dismissed out of hand. Given the uses and benefits herein described, the next question which must be considered is whether the cloning of human beings via SCNT technology should be undertaken.

Several compelling ethical objections exist that make human cloning a very problematic practice. First and foremost, the practice of cloning experiments with human life and inflicts medical danger upon the cloned subject without offering any benefits or informed consent for the subject. As discussed earlier, cloning is by no means safe for the cloned progeny. If human cloning continues the trend set by animal cloning, the clones are at great risk for debilitating and even life-threatening abnormalities. In addition to physical risks, cloning unduly imposes several troubling psychological burdens. In most cases, the clone is expected to live up to or replace the genetic original or to fulfill the desires or needs of another person.

The examples that Mr. Booth covers are a website that offers human cloning - that looks and seems totally 100% real - but isn't. It's part of the marketing plan for the upcoming film "Godsend," that comes out later this week. While this isn't a new idea at all for those people who spend a lot more time on the 'Net than reading paper publications, it's gaining steam. Both Lions Gate Films and New Line Cinema are embracing the idea, and have seemingly realized that the costs are lower and the "bang for the buck" is much more effective. Why wouldn't you participate in this?
