Hulk Hogan: World Wrestling Federation
built 347 days ago
Hulk Hogan is the stage name of Terry Bollea, one of the superstars of professional wrestling since the mid-1980s. Bollea joined the World Wrestling Federation in 1979. His rise in the ring coincided with the expansion of the WWF, and Hogan became a star through live events and pay-per-view television. His career got a big boost early on, when he appeared opposite Sylvester Stallone in the movie Rocky III (1983). By the late '80s "Hulkamania" was in full swing; Hulk Hogan was headlining live events like Wrestlemania and appearing on television, frequently on MTV and late night talk shows. Easily recognized by his extra-large size, long white hair and handlebar mustache, Hogan was famous for wearing feather boas, for ripping off his shirt in preparation for a match and for finishing off opponents with the leg drop.

What many people who know about Hogan don't know is he was in the "sport" for several years in virtual obscurity before hitting the big time. Hogan made his pro debut in 1978 and wrestled as "Sterling Golden" before becoming "Hulk." Hogan was getting main event matches while wrestling in the American Wrestling Alliance (AWA) in the early 1980s before he was cast as Thunderlips in Rocky III. That bit of casting propelled Hogan into the spotlight and he was soon to enter the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1983.

H[I]s name is Terry Bollea, but the world knows him as "Hulk Hogan" and more than anyone else, he was responsible for the meteoric rise in the popularity of professional wrestling in the 1980's. While not the most skillful wrestler of his era, nor even the biggest, Hogan combined his enormous physical stature with an outstanding screen presence to cause the World Wrestling Federation to rocket past all other Wrestling Organizations as the top provider of wrestling entertainment on a nationwide basis.
