At the same time, last season's results showed that Hughes' skating still is on an upswing, and she will be just 20 when the 2006 Olympics are held in Italy. Hughes is the first women's gold medalist not to immediately turn pro since Katarina Witt in 1984. Witt won the Olympics again in '88.

It was her mother who laced Hughes' first pair of figure skates when she was 3. She loved it so much that putting her daughter in lessons wasn't an option but a requirement.

Hughes has gained early acceptance to Harvard and has applied to Yale, Princeton and Columbia. She wants to major in "something in the sciences" and has spoken of going to medical school.

Hughes began skating at the age of three under the direction of Patti Johnson who coached her until Junior Worlds. She showed promise when she won the 1998 U.S. Junior Championships, then placed second at the 1999 World Junior Championships. Dubbed a "baby ballerina" along with Naomi Nari Nam and Sasha Cohen, Hughes placed fourth in her debut at the senior level at the 1999 U.S. championships. One year later at Nationals, she won the bronze medal behind Michelle Kwan and Cohen. Because she medaled at the Junior World Championships one year prior, Hughes was "grandfathered" into the senior World Championships, where she placed fifth. In 2001 she took bronze at the Grand Prix Final and the World Championships.

Until recently Hughes was focused entirely on school. Last spring she completed her freshman year at Yale. But she couldn't resist returning to the ice for the lucrative world of ice shows. While a three-month, 60-city tour is grueling, show skating doesn't demand the difficult triple jumps required for competition. Hughes would be hard-pressed to get back into shape for an Olympic season after not having competed for more than three years. "I have no doubt I could do it if I wanted to," she says.

The Hughes study site will be run by Joan Jones and her 8-12th grade students at Johnny Oldman School. Joan is ... the school principal. She is returning to ALISON after a one-year hiatus. Previously she was with ALISON at Minto School in winter 2003-04. Joan taught at Minto for seven years. Prior to that she taught in Fairbanks at the UAF Downtown Center and before that at Monroe High School.
