Hughes was ranked fourth after Tuesday's short program, the first round of the two-part figure skating competition. But in the four-minute free skate, which counts for most of the total score, she soared through seven triple jumps in a routine that was more difficult than ones attempted by Kwan and Slutskaya. She is the seventh American, third in the last four Games, to skate off with Olympic gold.

The next season, Hughes won the bronze medal at the 2006 National Championships and was named the alternate to the 2006 Winter Olympics. When Michelle Kwan withdrew, Hughes flew to Torino and ended up placing seventh at the Games. Hughes went on to the World Figure Skating Championships and placed eighth.

Hughes was odd woman out when Kwan was put onto the team after requesting an injury waiver last month. Though she knew that Kwan had been hurt on and off since October, Hughes wasn't counting on getting called up.

Hughes felt sympathy for Kwan, who had to settle for the bronze medal four years after Tara Lipinski dropped Kwan to silver at the Nagano Games. Kwan, 21, most likely will conclude her remarkable competitive career without an Olympic gold medal.

Although Kwan and Cohen handled the early wake-up call and the moment, Hughes did not, looking heavy-legged and tentative as she fell on a triple flip and downgraded two planned triple jumps to singles. Her marks for technical merit, would be good enough only for sixth place behind Kwan, the group winner; the European silver medalist, Elena Sokolova of Russia; Cohen; Shizuka Arakawa of Japan; and Elena Liashenko of Ukraine.

During the event, Hughes was in fourth going into the long program, and few people predicted she would win. But she landed seven triple jumps, including two triple-triple combinations, and narrowly won the event, edging out Russia's Irina Slutskaya in a tie-breaker after Michelle Kwan faltered and fell to third place.
