While Emily is not the first Hughes to attend Harvard—her sister, Rebecca graduated from the College in 1999—the Hughes’ allegiances are spread across the Ivy League. Both of her parents as well as her brother attended Cornell. Sister and 2002 Olympic gold medalist Sarah is currently enrolled at Yale College.

Emily Hughes is a figure skater. She is a member of the 2006 Olympic Ladies' Figure Skating Team. Emily came in third in the State Farm U.S. Championships in January 2006. She was chosen as an alternate on the U.S. Olympic Ladies' Figure Skating Team when Michelle Kwan was given an injury waiver and allowed to compete. When an injury later caused Kwan to withdraw from the competition, Emily was called upon to take her place.

Hughes has five siblings, including 2002 Olympic Games gold medalist Sarah Hughes. When compared to her sister's skating she often says "I am a 'righty' and Sarah is a 'lefty,' so you can't really compare us." This is in reference to the direction of rotation of a skater's jumps and spins. Emily rotates counter clockwise, while Sarah rotates clockwise.

Olympic hopeful Emily Hughes is displaying a special kind of grace off the ice these days. Despite a third-place finish at the US National Figure Skating Championship last weekend, which in most years would mean she's made the Olympic team, Hughes was instead named as an alternate. In her place, nine-time national champion and two-time Olympic medalist, Michelle Kwan. Kwan could not compete in the nationals because of an injury, and Olympic officials thought she deserved a chance to skate in her third Olympics, a decision Hughes says was a good one. Hughes may still get the chance to match her older sister Sarah's Olympic gold if Kwan doesn't prove she's fully recovered from her injury at the end of the month.

Emily Hughes surprised spectators but not necessarily herself in claiming the bronze medal behind two dynamos from Asia on Thursday. Japan’s Mao Asada took the gold and South Korea’s Yu-Na Kim took the silver. All three medalists are in the midst of their debut seasons on the international stage.
