From All Movie Guide: A burly, exuberant British character star, Hugh Griffith worked as a bank clerk before debuting onstage in 1939; he appeared in one film in 1940, but his film career didn't begin in earnest until the late '40s. He played forceful character roles in dozens of plays and films in both the U.S. and Britain. For his portrayal of Sheik Ilderim in Ben-Hur (1959) Griffith won a "Best Supporting Actor" Oscar; he was nominated for the same award for his portrayal of lusty Squire Western in Tom Jones (1963), perhaps his best known performance. Hugh Griffith was last onscreen in The Hound of the Baskervilles (1978). ~ All Movie Guide
Miss Rome loses most of her clothes soon after arriving at the villa, and spends half an hour wearing the above-mentioned table napkin around her neck before stealing the tops of Hugh Griffith's pajamas. Hugh Griffith is provided with dialog like "Who is that girl wearing my pajama tops?" Another of the residents of the villa paints Miss Rome's left leg blue. There are a lot of shots of her walking around in pajama tops with a blue leg.
Hugh Griffith was almost a "chameleon-like" actor but his intense look, deep dark eyes and bushy eyebrows often gave him away. He was born in Angelsey, North Wales on May 30, 1912. He originally worked as a banker but won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and was off on an acting career. He was ... a drinking friend of poet Dylan Thomas. He had a career on the London stage which was interrupted by a stint with the Welsh Fusiliers in World War II. After the War he began a long film career appearing in some 50 films.
Hugh Griffith Despite failing to gain entry the first time round, Hugh Griffith was presented with an honorary D.Litt degree by the University of Wales, Bangor, before his death in 1980. He is commemorated by a plaque in Marianglas primary school.

[O]ne can almost smell Squire Western as Hugh Griffith plays him in the brimming and boisterous movie version of Henry Fielding's Tom Jones. With his huge unsynchronized eyes and a face like a Sheffield hatchet, Griffith embodies magnificently one of Fielding's greatest complements to that category of human character that defies heaven and hell, having a kind of rampantly benevolent diabolism unique to the earth.
