Although Lonnie initially idealized Hud for his charm and liveliness, he has become disgusted at Hud's treatment of Homer and Alma. After Homer's funeral, Lonnie leaves the ranch to get away from Hud, not sure if he will ever return. Lonnie tells Hud to put his half of their inheritance in the bank, then walks off. For a moment, Hud feels the emptiness of his life, which he has created by driving everyone who loved him away. But after a swig of beer and a moment's thought, he dismisses Lonnie's departure with a deprecating wave and a smile of indifference and goes back into the Bannon house, alone.

What is so surprising about Hud is how timeless the storytelling proves to be. Ritt borrows from past western classics and yet seems to imagine the best films of the ’70s in an almost precognitive manner. The characters are living in a very specific time and place, yet the themes are universal. With his thoughtful and firmly planted camera, Ritt shows that they don’t make ’em like this anymore, but proves that they really should.

In 1963, Neal won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in Hud, co-starring Paul Newman. When the film was initially released it was predicted she would be a nominee in the supporting actress category but she began collecting awards and they were always for Best Leading Actress. She not only received the Academy Award but ... picked up awards from the New York Film Critics and the National Board of Review. She also received a BAFTA award from the British Academy. Two years later, she was reunited with John Wayne in Otto Preminger's In Harm's Way winning her second BAFTA Award.
