Howard Stern, who needs every media tempest he can muster these days, waded into a big one last Tuesday. Stern was interviewing Rick Salomon, the auteur behind Paris Hilton's sex video. At some point during the interview—accounts vary—Stern took a phone call from a listener. The listener proceeded to spew invective, asking Salomon if he had slept with black celebrities and liberally using the n-word. Within hours, anti-Stern forces had mobilized. John Hogan, president of Clear Channel networks, banished the show from six markets.

Howard Stern announced at a major press conference that he has been picked up at NINE major markets across the nation, including several he had lost thanks to the FCC-Clear Channel Bush agenda. One of the most significant gains is Florida, where Howard is likely to have a big and critical impact. Howard has a message for Kerry, btw: He says he will fight for you and not expect anything in return, but it would be nice if you came onto the show and spoke to the estimated over 10 million Kerry supporters who listen. As it is, part of the FCC 'villification' of Stern is a strategy to ward Kerry and other Democrats away from what could be a blockbuster FREE forum. Meanwhile, the Repugs are now routinely guesting on rightwing talkshows and getting the last laugh. see: http://www.howardstern.com

For all Stern's complaints about the FCC, the truth is that government policies made him what he is today. When the government lifted regulations on radio station ownership in the mid-'90s, communications giants like Clear Channel muscled their way into local markets - so no more Dave in the Morning or Billy the Wonder Weasel. Larger-than-life national personalities like Stern and Rush Limbaugh replaced quirky local hosts. Stern can now be heard on 40 stations nationwide. He may be pissed at the FCC for telling him what not to say, but he should send them a thank-you note for allowing him to spray himself across such a big audience.

Howard has finally started to turn this into a real web site, and the site has exploded in popularity now that Howard is taking on Congress and Bush. The site is loaded with news links regarding the FCC and Clear Channel issues, and Howard is now using it as a tool to supplement his show.

One guest who joined Stern on Monday was the shock jock Bubba the Love Sponge, who was fired by Clear Channel two years ago. The DJ, who legally changed his name from Todd Clem, has been recruited by Stern to host an afternoon drive time show on Channel 101, one of two Sirius channels managed by Stern.

"Clear Channel drew a line in the sand today with regard to protecting our listeners from indecent content, and Howard Stern's show blew right through it," according to a statement from John Hogan, president and CEO of Clear Channel. "It was vulgar, offensive and insulting, not just to women and African-Americans but to anyone with a sense of common decency."
