Howard Hughes: People
built 236 days ago
Hughes was portrayed by Terry O'Quinn in Disney's The Rocketeer (1991), substituting for the "mystery inventor" (Doc Savage) in the original comic book version. In the film, Hughes had designed the rocket for use by soldiers, regretted the project, and declined to manufacture any more rockets. In the first scene with Hughes, he is arguing with two War Department people about his decision.
In addition to his many achievements, Hughes was known to his friends and his acquaintances as a person of bizarre habits and personal tics. There were numerous causes for Hughes’s increasingly strange behavior. From an early age he was quite deaf and could not hear conversations around him, yet he told few people of his disability. He conducted much of his business on the telephone because he could hear better using it.

Aside from surrounding himself with the best people, Hughes had a secret weapon that allowed him to be more hands-on with his projects than many other entrepreneurs. What was it? Sneakers. Hughes had a habit of wearing sneakers, which would allow him to walk about very quietly and enter his work areas stealthily to monitor his staff without being detected.
The Lockheed Model 14 Super Electra made a record for circling the globe -- in 3 days, 19 hours and 14 minutes with eccentric millionaire Howard Hughes piloting. One thousand police officers were on hand at New York's Floyd Bennett Field to control the throngs of people who showed up to greet Hughes.
