Howard Hughes: Hughes Tool Company
built 183 days ago
Howard Hughes was born in Texas in 1905. Raised by an overly obsessive mother who forced him to endure strange cleanliness rituals, douse himself with mineral oil daily, and forced him to stay away from other 'germ ridden' children, Howard had no other alternative than to be different. His mother died when he was 16 and his father perished 2 years later. The youth took over his father's company, the Hughes Tool Company and was immediately recognized for his brilliant business skills.

He attended private schools in California and Massachusetts, Rice Institute in Houston, and the California Institute of Technology. His mother died when Hughes was 16 and his father when he was 18, leaving him an orphan but with an estate worth $871,000 and a patent for a drill bit used in most oil and gas drilling that brought large revenues to the family's Hughes Tool Company that manufactured the bit. Hughes left school to take control of the company, using its profits to finance a variety of projects which he hoped would make him a legend in his own time. In 1925, when he was 20, Hughes married Ella Rice and moved to Los Angeles (they separated in 1928). In 1927 Hughes entered the motion picture business and produced such films as "Hell's Angels" (1930), "Scarface" (1932), and "The Outlaw" (1941).

Hughes was born in Humble, Texas, in late 1905, although his exact birthdate is in dispute. Hughes liked to claim that he was born on Christmas Eve, but his baptismal records show September 24. His parents were Allene and Howard R. Hughes Sr., who patented rotary oil drilling equipment which let drillers get at previously inaccessible oil. He founded Hughes Tool Company in 1909. Hughes’ mother was obsessed with protecting her son from all germs and diseases, an obvious root of his later bizarre behavior. Hughes picked up an interest in all things mechanical from his father.

Howard Robard Hughes Sr. died when his son was 18. Howard inherited a controlling share in the Hughes Tool Company but his uncle, Rupert Hughes, supervised his business interests until he reached the age of 21. In 1924 Hughes bought out his relatives and became the sole owner of the Hughes Tool Company.
