House of 1000 Corpses: Captain Spaulding

In the beginning of House of 1000 Corpses, Captain Spaulding tells a group of teenagers the story of Dr. Satan. He explains that Dr. Satan was a murderer, torturer and master surgeon by the name of S. Quentin Quale. Quale was an intern at Willows County Mental Hospital where he performed forbidden brain surgery on patients in order to create a race of 'super humans'. Quale was discovered and ended up hanged by an angry mob. The following day his body had vanished. No trace of Dr. Satan was ever discovered.

HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES isn't a great film, although everything was there to make it a great film. Instead it is a good film that cultish fans admire for the greatness it could have been. A lot less Otis babble and more Captain Spaulding and Dr. Satan would have made this a classic.

In the first film, House of 1000 Corpses, Captain Spaulding's myth about Dr. Satan led the teenagers to seek out the place of his hanging. This led them to meet up with the murderous Firefly family.

While perhaps not a full-fledged black comedy, House of 1,000 Corpses keeps the tone of the movie on a humorous side, even if the jokes tend to be "sick". The early events of the film, especially the outright comedic scenes with the highly memorable Captain Spaulding, may even give the viewer the misinterpretation that this is a horror movie spoof. The events do... shift into a tale of nastiness where the humor is through the eyes of sadistic torturers.
