Hotbar is a program which adds emoticons and images to your emails. It ... includes desktop wallpapers, animations, ecards, a bundled weather tool and Shopper Reports. After agreeing to Hotbars Active X Agreement, the install cannot be cancelled unless the window is terminated through task manager. As a default, hotbar installs a search assistant toolbar not just in Internet Explorer but in general explorer browsing. It also includes Shopper Reports, a price comparison tool which produces advertisements of best deals on the net in a window pane on the left side of IE. As well as this tool, hotbar also produces pop-up advertisements while you browse.

Hotbar (... known as HbTools) is a plugin for Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office Outlook and Outlook Express produced by Zango. Hotbar adds a toolbar and the option of extra skins to these programs. It also allows the user to add emoticons to emails created in Outlook or Outlook Express or check the weather report. Its major revenue comes from the excessive use of pop-ups which are displayed according to a user's behavior and current URL. The application can show over 15 pop-ups a day, depending on how much Internet browsing has occurred.

An escalating dispute last year between Symantec and Hotbar.com, which makes ad-suppported software that Symantec's anti-spyware software can detect and delete, came to a head in a lawsuit filed last June by Symantec. In that lawsuit, Symantec fought against Hotbar for the right to eradicate the Hotbar software, which displays advertising on the user's Windows-based desktop. This week, the two opponents settled the lawsuit with the understanding that Symantec will consider Hotbar as "low risk." According to Symantec, low risk means "something we generally recommend that users can ignore." Hotbar 's CEO Oren Dobronsky explains why he's happy with the lawsuit's settlement.

Once the Hotbar plug-in is loaded, you'll be able to "brand" your browser with any of the following skins. Once a graphic gets old, simply "clear" your skin to reset it back to boring, drab gray, or simply choose another one. And if the mood strikes you, it is equally easy to create your own skins. No special tools or skills required. Hotbar has raised the notch on banner advertising by allowing companies to embed their ad within the browser. Branding has never been more fun!
