Hospitals were one of the greatest achievements of the Muslims during the Middle Ages. Hospitals were built all over the Muslim World with high standards of health care. One of the reasons for the Muslims' interest in health was the saying of the Prophet Muhammad that God had given a cure for every disease. Furthermore, the third Pillar of Islam was charity which could go to the poor and sick, so the building of hospitals and taking care of the sick was a part of a religious duty.

OAKLAND, Calif., Feb. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Inc., Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and their subsidiaries (KFHP/H) reported that total revenue for 2006 increased to $34.4 billion from $31.1 billion in 2005. Net income for 2006 was more than $1.3 billion, compared to $1.0 billion in 2005. The operating margin for the year ended December 31, 2006, was reported at 2.8 percent, compared to an operating margin of 2.6 percent in 2005.

--Hospitals continue to be challenged in meeting certain patient safety requirements. Non-compliance rates for six of the 16 National Patient Safety Goal requirements range between 16 and 37 percent. While some of this performance can be explained by more searching during on-site evaluations by Joint Commission survey teams, a number of hospitals appear to be struggling with the re-design of patient care processes - such as the reconciliation of medication lists when patients move from one care site to another - that the goal requirements are seeking.

This paper summarizes a Shattuck Hammond Partners study, released in late 2000, that found marked erosion in California hospitals’ financial health. The study examined the revenue and expense dynamics that contributed to this erosion and explored future challenges, some of which are unique to California’s regulatory environment, in the context of the hospital industry’s current financial performance. The study concluded that California hospitals face a potential crisis—defined as the potential nonviability of a large portion of its hospital infrastructure—and explored the policy questions and implications of this situation.
