CINESCAPE and The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films recently announced the nominees for the 2003 Saturn Awards ceremony. In the Feature Film category, Spider-Man received nominations for: Best Fantasy Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Direction, Best Music, and Best Special Effects.

Columbia Pictures has put a sequel to its horror film "The Grudge" on the fast track following the first film's better-than-expected opening last weekend. "The Grudge," which stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, earned $39.1 million in its opening weekend, a hefty return on its $10 million budget.

Some notable trends have marked horror films in the 2000s. A minimalist approach which was equal parts Val Lewton's theory of "less is more" (usually employing low-budget techniques seen on 1999's The Blair Witch Project) has been evident, particularly in the emergence of Japanese horror movies which have been remade into successful Americanized versions, such as The Ring (2002), and The Grudge (2004).
Today, AMC’s horror franchise of choice is, appropriately, the “Halloween” films. Whoever decided to show the original “Halloween” at 10 a.m. and the subsequent sequels during prime time should probably lose their job. The original is scary at any time of day, but preferably not after an 8 a.m. lecture.
