This Week's New Cinema Releases Horror films can date badly, and few classics can stand the test of time. Films such as "Psycho" and "The Haunting" (both of which have been re-made recently) are films which stand out, and can still thrill. Hollywood's need to re-make such films demonstrates the lack of imagination currently being put to use in this genre. Most recently successful horror films have been surprise hits, revolving around mainly supernatural tales. "The Sixth Sense" and "The Blair Witch Project" relied much more on the element of implied horror, a more subtle technique which has fallen by the wayside recently as slash and stalk movie has become more popular.

Boris Karloff as Frankenstein's Monster Among the popular English-language horror films of the late 1990s, only 1999's surprise independent hit The Blair Witch Project attempted straight-ahead scares. But even then, the horror was accomplished in the context of a mockumentary, or mock-documentary. Other films such as M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense (1999) ... concentrated more on unnerving and unsettling themes than on gore. Japanese horror films, such as Hideo Nakata's Ringu in 1998, and Masuru Tsushima's Otsuyu (aka The Haunted Lantern) (1997) also found success internationally with a similar formula.
What about The Blair Witch Project, the horror film that has garnered more attention than any other in the past few years? Although Williams credits it for "taking horror seriously," he feels that it was "rather inept—a one-trick pony that didn't deserve the attention it got."
