Honshu

Honshu is the main island where all the main cities are – Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Kyoto, Kobe, Yokohama, Hiroshima and many others. It is as mountainous as the other islands, with only a few coastal plains where the population can maintain a fragile foothold on the land.
Since Shikoku is bordered on the north by Honshu and on the west by Kyushu, there are numerous potential destinations on both islands for those wishing to extend their trip. Closer to home... are two smaller islands:

Honshu Wolf The dissappearance of the Honshu wolf has had a very negative influence of the ecology of Japan since it was a keystone predator. When it declined, populations of deer and boar have skyrocketed and this in turn has had repurcussions for plant species and so on down the line. The tanuki that was mentioned before was unable to fill the biological niche left by the wolf and so there are problems to this day. This is one reason that it has been discussed to possibly reintroduce wolves into Japan but although this would be good for the overall ecology, it could be devastating for any remaining Honshu wolves if they are still out there.

Like the other islands of Japan, Honshu is extremely mountainous. The loftiest peaks of Japan are located in the central mountain mass, often called the Japanese Alps. Fuji, the highest summit of the country, has an elevation of 3776 m (12,389 ft) above sea level. Mt. Asama (2542 m/8342 ft), the largest active volcano of Japan, is about 140 km (about 85 mi) NW of Tokyo. The Fuji region is often subject to severe earthquakes. The Shinano R., the longest in Japan, is located on Honshu; other rivers on the island included among the largest in the country are the Tone, Kitakami, Tenryu, Mogami, and Kino.

With the end of the Allied occupation in 1952, business opportunities for Honshu were plentiful. When Oji Paper had been reorganized, forming Honshu, Honshu had been given six paper mills, located in Edogawa, Iwabuchi, Fuji, Yodogawa, Nakutso, and Kumano. The company ... took possession of a chemical plant in Nagoya. During the 1950s Honshu used some of the profits generated by its booming business to rebuild and modernize the existing mills.

Honshu is connected to the other islands by tunnels or bridges. Three new bridge systems have been built across the islands of the Inland Sea between Honshu and Shikoku (Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge and the Ohnaruto Bridge; Shin-Onomichi Bridge, Innoshima Bridge, Ikuchi Bridge, Tatara Bridge, Ohmishima Bridge, Hakata-Ohshima Bridges, and the First, Second and Third Kurushima-Kaikyo Bridge; Shimotsui-Seto Bridge, Hitsuishijima Bridge, Iwakurojima Bridge, Yoshima Bridge, Kita Bisan-Seto Bridge, and the Minami Bisan-Seto Bridge), and the Seikan Tunnel connects Honshu with Hokkaido.
