When it was introduced for the start of the new millennium, the Honda S2000 was a minor revelation for the driving enthusiast. This little Honda, with its racecar-inspired suspension, perfect weight balance and high-output four-cylinder engine, was capable of giving the German and American convertibles of the day a good thrashing on a tight and twisty road. That it ... undercut them on price, was more fuel-efficient and was backed by Honda's reputation for reliability was the icing on the cake.

For all the penny-pinching... the 2009 Honda S2000 will have its own chassis and body structure. Moreover, the savings achieved with shared components makes room in the budget for fairly extensive use of lightweight construction materials, such as aluminum and carbon fiber. That, sources say, will keep curb weight to around 2750 pounds, about 100 pounds lighter than the old S2000 and on par with the rival Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky. Though a comparable MX-5 weighs even less, the 2009 Honda S2000 should have a weight-to-power ratio that delivers brisk performance with good fuel economy, a traditional Honda goal.
The Honda S2000 epitomizes 40 years of Honda’s racing history. It has a smart maintenance minder with headrest-mounted stereo speakers and an outside temperature gauge. The 2007 Honda S2000 is equipped with a 2.2 liter four-cylinder engine that produces 237 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed close-ratio manual transmission and Rear-Wheel Drive are standard. It achieves an estimated fuel economy of 20/26 mpg (city/highway). The new S2000 comes with a basic warranty of 60 months / 60,000 miles.

From the outside, the 2006 Honda S2000 makes a clear statement that its primary purpose in life is to go fast. A gaping air dam in the front fascia; a long hood; sleek, angry headlights; and low sills down the length of both sides all combine to make it look like a caricature of a sports car plucked straight out of a Manga comic book. Once installed in the cockpit--it is more like a cockpit than a cabin--the race-car suspicions are confirmed. A red circular Start button cries out to be pushed, and the S2000's aluminum-capped six-speed shifter invites quick throws and quick acceleration. Like its 2005 predecessor, the '06 S2000 comes with Honda's 2.2-liter 16-valve four-cylinder VTEC multiport fuel-injection power plant, which manufactures a blistering 237 horsepower: for comparison purposes, that's more power than the six-cylinder Lexus RX 330 SUV.

The new Honda S2000 is comfortable to sit in, offering contoured seats in leather. The seat back's side bolsters extend all the way up to the shoulder for good lateral support when cornering. Seat adjustment is manual and includes adjustments for fore and aft position and seatback angle. Legroom is ample and the textured-metal foot pedals complete the feel of sitting in a race car.
