In several European countries, Holocaust Revisionism is considered to be a serious crime. In France, people can be sent to jail for up the a year; in Switzerland up to three years; in Germany--as in Israel--for five years; in Austria, a prison term up to 10 years is possible.

The influence of Holocaust Revisionism is growing steadily both here and abroad. In the United States, Revisionism was launched in earnest in 1977 with the publication of the book The Hoax of the Twentieth Century by Arthur R. Butz. Professor Butz teaches electrical engineering and computer sciences at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

Holocaust-denial, which will be used interchangeably with Holocaust revisionism in this bibliography, is a body of literature that seeks to "prove" that the Jewish Holocaust did not happen. Although individual revisionists may have different motives and beliefs, they all share at least one point: that there was no systematic attempt by Nazi Germany to exterminate European Jewry. Hence they claim that the Holocaust is a "hoax" perpetrated by Jews ("Zionists") in an attempt to blackmail the rest of the world for sympathy, money, and legitimacy for the State of Israel.

Now, Holocaust revisionism is one thing, whereas the history of Holocaust revisionism is another. By and large the history of Holocaust revisionism deals with the various difficulties in getting the research of Holocaust revisionists out to the public. The history of Holocaust revisionism, even before 1976, covers a wide field. Much still remains obscure. Surely, it is a most interesting story, with serious as well as amusing aspects. Again, by and large, it has to do with freedom of speech and freedom of research.

Except for books by David Irving, works of Holocaust revisionism are almost never reviewed in scholarly journals or in the mainstream press. However, in writing about Holocaust- denial literature, some individual titles have been singled out for either review or rebuttal; in some cases collections of documents have been compiled to refute the claims of revisionists.

This can be an especially difficult philosophy to live by, with the most extreme proponents of Holocaust revisionism—those who have not-so-hidden anti-Semitic agendas. A classic example is Francis Parker Yockey’s Imperium: The Philosophy of History and Politics, written under the Irish-Viking-Russian nom-de-plume of Ulick Varange and dedicated to Adolf Hitler.
