ATLANTA, Aug. 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Margot Freudenberg, a Holocaust survivor and founder of the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge movement, will turn 100 this year. As she celebrates her centennial, the American Cancer Society is launching a record expansion of the system she created -- a network of free housing and support for out-of-town cancer patients and their caregivers while undergoing care. Within the next two years, the number of Hope Lodges will increase to 34, with Hope Lodges set to open this fall in New York City and this winter in Twin Cities/Minneapolis and Grand Rapids, Mich. An additional nine facilities are in development, and groundbreakings for expansion of the Charleston Hope Lodge and a new Hope Lodge in Iowa City, Iowa were held earlier this summer.

The demand for Holocaust and Genocide Studies has grown over the past 20 years. Five states are now mandating that the subject be taught in the schools, and seven states -- including Pennsylvania -- are recommending inclusion in school curricula. It is expected that more states will institute such requirements. Thus, teachers and librarians are seeking more information and instruction. Furthermore, the end of the 20th century saw an explosion of new scholarship and new perspectives on the Holocaust. This scholarship is reinforced by the desire of survivors and those who lived through WWII to educate future generations and to bear witness to the fact that the Holocaust did happen.

Nicole Kidman will narrate a feature-length documentary examining the life of Holocaust survivor and Nazi-hunter Simon Wiesenthal, who died in September at 96. Simon Wiesenthal Center dean and founder Rabbi Marvin Hier and director Richard Trank have started production on the film, produced by the center's documentary films division, Moriah Films, which is eyeing a fall 2006 release.
