Though the Holocaust was in large part made possible by the passive or active cooperation of occupied peoples as well as Germans, over 20,000 persons have been recognized as "righteous gentiles" by the Yad Vashem memorial organization. Numerous individuals in occupied countries, including thousands of Poles, Danes, Dutch, French, Belgians, Ukrainians and hundreds of others risked their lives to hide and save Jews. Diplomats violated orders to save Jews by giving them visas. Among the most outstanding cases:

The idea for a Holocaust Memorial was first proposed in 1988 but the design for the monument wasn’t approved until 1999. At that time, U.S. architect Peter Eisenman’s controversial design was chosen as a fitting tribute to the Jews that died before and during World War II as part of Hitler’s plan to exterminate the race.

The university reported that the concept of a memorial for Holocaust and genocide survivors was conceived of at a special event in September honoring more than 50 Holocaust survivors in Sonoma County. According to the university, Hartman’s photos of survivors were ... displayed at this event.
