During the application process, Hofstra University received overwhelming support for the debate from county, federal, state, and local elected officials as well as area businesses and utilities. All officials have pledged their municipal and governmental support to ensure that the debate will be a success.

Hofstra will host the Oct.15 debate, which will focus on foreign policy. The first debate, dealing with domestic policy, will be at the University of Mississippi on Sept. 26. Nashville's Belmont University will stage the second debate on Oct. 7, using a town hall format featuring audience questions.

Hofstra submitted an application in April to the Commission on Presidential Debates, a non-partisan organization that manages the debates. Hofstra was one of 19 facilities vying for the opportunity to host one of the three presidential debates, or the vice presidential debate.

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., Nov. 19 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today the Commission on Presidential Debates announced that it had chosen Hofstra University for the site of its final 2008 Presidential Debate, to be held on October 15, 2008. The Commission on Presidential Debates, which is a nonprofit, nonpartisan corporation, has sponsored and produced every presidential and vice-presidential debate since 1988.

Rabinowitz said there is a $1.35 million fee to host the debate, and when additional costs are factored in, the debate will cost Hofstra about $2.5 million. University trustees have already committed to cover those costs, or raise the money.
