Hobbit: Bilbo Baggins

As remarked above, Tolkien substantially revised The Hobbit's text describing Bilbo's dealings with Gollum in order to blend the story better into what The Lord of the Rings had become. This revision became the second edition, published in 1951 in both UK and American editions. Slight corrections to the text have appeared in the third (1966) and fourth editions (1978).

In The Hobbit, women (human or of other races) are notable for their absence. Females scarcely exist in this world, except in a very few references, each relating to a male character (Bilbo's mother, the maiden victims of Smaug, the nieces of Thorin).

Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Sierra Entertainment, Inc., a studio of Vivendi Universal Publishing, today announced development of "The Hobbit," a videogame based on J.R.R. Tolkien's worldwide best-selling novel. The game is due to be released in 2003 for the Nintendo GameCube. "The Hobbit," developed by Austin, Texas-based Inevitable Entertainment, is a third-person action/adventure game set in the world of Middle-Earth. In the game, players take the persona of Bilbo Baggins, an unassuming hobbit who has been unwittingly thrust into an epic adventure. "Bringing the epic worlds described in Tolkien's works to life through a video game has been an amazing experience," said Russell Byrd, managing director at Inevitable Entertainment.

Ask your students if they noticed other rhymes throughout The Hobbit. They could ... make up their own rhymes in a style that echoes the character. A song by Bilbo about how much he misses his home and hearth, its coziness and comfort, would be both appealing and a truthful reflection of Bilbo's feelings.

Tolkien claims that he started writing The Hobbit after suddenly, without premeditation, writing on a blank piece of paper: "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit"[8]. The misunderstanding of rabbit may have to do with hobbits' disposition to tunnels, and the fact The Hobbit Bilbo is mockingly described several times as a rabbit in the original text.
