Hitler Youth: Nazi Germany
built 279 days ago
The basic unit of the Hitler Youth was the Bann, the equivalent of a military regiment. Of these Banne, there were more than 300 spread throughout Germany, each of a strength of about 6000 youths. Each unit carried a flag of almost identical design, but the individual Bann was identified by its number, displayed in black on a yellow scroll above the eagle's head. The flags measured 200 cm long by 145 cm high. The displayed eagle in the center was adopted from the former Imperial State of Prussia. In its talons it grasped a white coloured sword and a black hammer.

An important part of the Hitler Youth system was authority given to the members. The Hitler Youth made a point that "youth must be led by youth". This was an important part of the Hitler Youth ethos, meant to cultivate the image of unsullied German youth rejecting the failed old leders and their failed policies and principles. In fact, boys and girls were given leadership positions. The slogan... was misleading. he boys were incouraged to question or even reject some authority figures, such as parents or church leaders, which appeled to many boys. They were had, however, to accept NAZI principles without question.

Salon : Hitler Youth is as carefully comprehensive as it is morally careful. Kater is an expert compiler of data, beginning with the early 20th century roots of German youth leagues and ending with the hideous details of 12-year-olds being sent to fight on the front lines. He makes clear that the Hitler Youth instigated its share of atrocities, but ... that its members were forced to face the gory reality of war, and suffer accordingly, at a terribly young age...Within the greater Nazi nightmare, the Youth are uniquely frightening. The particulars of their frightfulness are well sketched in Kater's study.

The relations between the Catholic Youth and the Hitler Youth are involved and delicate. They refused to agree to any Nazi interference with the policy of the Catholic Church towards its youth, and they demanded the freedom and the right to dictate the corporal, spiritual and professional education of the youth entrusted in their care.

[One] program to the Hitler Youth was the Patrol Service. The idea behind the patrol service was to be a conformity enforcer. They worked very close with the police. The assignment was to rule out deviation from Nazi moral and ideological code. The service became a junior Gestapo where the members of the Hitler Youth had a lot of power. Offenses that were looked for include smoking, drinking, improper saluting, curfew violations, and singing of prohibited songs, just to name a few.

Well, right, everyone was being indoctrinated all the time, and in the reality within that indoctrination, the Hitler Youth was like the boy scouts. Like if Donald Rumsfeld was writing the boy scout pledge. Kidding. But this whole hysteria about was he or wasn't he, the point is that everybody was, and even the ones that weren't forced into it got out of it after the war and managed to be productive human beings in life. There's a big difference between being an average German citizen during the 30s and a member of the Nazi party.
