Adolf Hitler was a native of Austria and born on April 20, 1889 at Braunau-am-Inn; on the Bavarian border. His father, Alois, was illegitimate, and for a time bore his mother’s name Schicklegruber By 1876 he had established his claim to the surname Hitler. Adolf never used any other name, but the name Schicklegruber was revived by political opponents in Vienna in the 1930s.

Adolf Hitler was born in Braunau am Inn, Austria-Hungary, the fourth child of six.[2] His father, Alois Hitler, (1837–1903), was a customs official. His mother, Klara Pölzl, (1860–1907), was Alois' third wife. She was ... his half-niece, so a papal dispensation had to be obtained for the marriage. Of Alois and Klara's six children, only Adolf and his sister Paula reached adulthood.[3] Hitler's father also had a son, Alois Jr, and a daughter, Angela, by his second wife.[3]

About six years after Adolf's birth, his father retired and moved near Linz, Austria. Adolf received good marks in primary school, but he was a poor student in secondary school. His low marks angered his harsh, ill-tempered father. Alois wanted his son to have a career as a civil servant. But the boy wanted to be an artist.

Alois, who was fifty-one when Adolf was born, was extremely keen for his son to do well in life. Alois did have another son by an earlier marriage but he had been a big disappointment to him and eventually ended up in prison for theft. Alois was a strict father and savagely beat his son if he did not do as he was told.
