Adolf Hitler was born in Austria in 1889 and, as a teen, lived a poor life in Vienna. He served as a lance corporal for the Bavarian military during the first World War, and received two Iron Crosses for bravery. After the war Hitler breathed life into the German Worker's Party, renamed it the National Socialist German Worker's Party, and in 1920 released the 25-Point program, a list of Party demands. In 1923 Hitler and the Nazi Party attempted to take over the Bavarian government by force. Hitler was arrested and imprisoned; he served only nine months of a five-year sentence and spent his free time writing Mein Kampf, his manifesto/autobiography. In 1932 the National Socialist German Worker's Party (the German abbreviation being NSDAP or Nazi) won 30 percent of the popular vote in the presidential election (Grobman 28).

In 1914, World War One began and Adolf Hitler enlisted in the German Army. After serving for four years, Hitler made his way back to Munich, Germany. When he arrived, Munich was different. He saw and heard Communists, Nationalists, Bavarian Separatists, and Socialists all making use of the newly granted freedoms of speech and press. In 1919, Hitler got a job in the army as a political training official. Here he came in contact with the general in command in Bavaria, Major General Ritter von Epp, later to become Hitler’s regent in Bavaria; and with Captain Ernst Röhm, one of the most important figures of the Nazi days.

His father, Alois Hitler (1837–1903), was a minor customs official who had been born illegitimately. Until he was 40, Alois used his mother's surname, Schicklgruber. In 1876, Alois took on his adoptive father's surname, originally spelt 'Hiedler'. Later, Adolf Hitler was accused by his political enemies of not rightfully being a Hitler, but a Schicklgruber. This term was ... used by Allied propaganda, during the Second World War, when papers bearing the phrase Heil Schicklgruber were disseminated via airdropped pamphlets over German cities.

Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889, in the small Austrian town of Braunau on the Inn River along the Bavarian-German border, son of an Austrian customs official of moderate means. His early youth in Linz on the Danube seems to have been under the repressive influence of an authoritarian and, after retirement in 1895, increasingly short-tempered and domineering father until the latter's death in 1903. After an initially fine performance in elementary school, Adolf soon became rebellious and began failing in the Realschule (college preparatory school). Following transfer to another school, he finally left formal education altogether in 1905 and, refusing to bow to the discipline of a regular job, began his long years of dilettante, aimless existence, reading, painting, wandering in the woods, and dreaming of becoming a famous artist. In 1907, when his mother died, he moved to Vienna in an attempt to enroll in the famed Academy of Fine Arts. His failure to gain admission that year and the next led him into a period of deep depression and seclusion from his friends.

He was the third son and the fourth of six children of Alois Hitler (born Schicklgruber) (1837–1903), a minor customs official, and Klara Pölzl (1860–1907), his second cousin, and third wife. Because of the close kinship of the two, a papal dispensation had to be obtained for the marriage. Of Alois and Klara's six children, only Adolf and his younger sister Paula reached adulthood.
