Hitler: Adolf Hitler
built 254 days ago
Adolf Hitler was the Austrian-born Chancellor and President of Germany from January 30, 1933 until his death on April 30, 1945. He was ... the leader (German: Der Führer) of the National Socialist German Workers Party (National-sozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, or Nazi Party) which gained political power through threat, intimidation, and outright violence throughout Germany in the aftermath of the First World War. Hitler’s policies and beliefs resulted in the mass extermination of the Jews, Gypsies, and other peoples he considered “inferior” throughout central and eastern Europe. This was directly responsible for the outbreak of World War II, causing the deaths of untold millions on and off the battlefield, and ending only with his own death in his Berlin bunker.

In February 1919, Adolf Hitler was serving with a remnant of the German Army that was processing Russian and French prisoners of war for release. In March, he returned to Munich, still in the army and a trusted anti-Bolshevik, working with army intelligence trying to keep track of the many different political organizations. Hitler was assigned to investigate a group of about twenty-five who called themselves the German Workers' Party. The group met in beer halls, which was the custom in Bavaria. They saw themselves as patriotic Bavarians in support of common working people. They believed that Germans were a superior breed.

On Sept. 12, 1938, Adolf Hitler delivered a speech before a Nazi Party gathering in Nuremberg, belittling news reports that he was preparing an invasion of Czechoslovakia. Hitler lied that he had nothing but the greatest respect for the Czechoslovak people. His problem was only with the regime of the President of Czechoslovakia, Eduard Benes. Hitler demanded that Czechoslovakia surrender control over the heavily German-populated Sudetenland region, but forswore military action. For a few days, the world naively breathed a sigh of relief that war had been averted; this, despite the fact that on Sept. 10, in reply to a speech by President Benes appealing for calm and peace, Nazi official Hermann Göring had railed against the Czechs, "This miserable pygmy race without culture, no one knows where it came from, is oppressing a cultured people [Sudeten Germans] and behind it is Moscow and the eternal mask of the Jew devil."

With a link to Adolf Hitler driving up the price, a WWII - era German gun sold for $140,025 in an online auction. Bidding began Jan. 30 and stalled for days at $13,000 before rising as deadline loomed. At least 60 bids were put in for the weapon; the name of Thursday's winning bidder was not released. Randall Gibson, author of "The Krieghoff Parabellum," a reference book on the gunmaker, has said he believes Hitler did own the gun. He said the company gave engraved guns to Hitler and other high-ranking German officials as it sought military contracts before WWII.
