In the univariate analysis, prostatism (in men), a history of surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysm, and infection were identified as risk factors for recurrence (data not shown). The results of the multivariate analysis of these factors together with the type of repair, age, size of hernia, and primary hernia or first recurrence of hernia are shown in Table 3. In this analysis, suture repair, infection, prostatism (in men), and history of surgery for abdominal aortic aneurysm were all identified as independent risk factors for recurrence. After adjustment for the other factors, mesh repair was found to result in a 57 percent lower rate of recurrence (95 percent confidence interval, 19 to 77 percent; P=0.009) than suture repair. The difference in rates of recurrence between the suture-repair group and the mesh-repair group was not affected by the size of the hernia.

Smiley, the icon par excellence of late eighties acid music, has gatecrashed the History of Surgery, like the joker who stands behind the TV news correspondent and makes faces. Smiley returns but does so in an absurd way, in a context where it does not belong. The Sónar 2007 image seems to highlight the pointlessness of all returns, whether to the past or the future, and leaves the viewer with more questions than answers.

The history of surgery dates back to at least the 3rd millennium BC in Ancient Egypt. Researchers have ... uncovered a mandible, dated to approximately 2750 BC, having two perforations just below the root of the first molar, indicating the draining of an abscessed tooth. Recent excavations of the construction workers of the Egyptian pyramids also led to the discovery of evidence of brain surgery on a labourer, who continued living for two years afterwards.

This work laid the foundation for another landmark in the history of cancer surgery, the development of 'regional lymphadenectomy'. This involves the removal of the lymph nodes surrounding the affected organ. This technique led to a drastic reduction in tumour recurrence rates for these cancers, which include breast, bowel and stomach cancers.
