The constitutional history of Canada begins with the 1763 Treaty of Paris, in which France ceded most of New France to Great Britain. Formed through an act of federation in 1867, Canada obtained self-rule in 1931 and had its constitution patriated (including a civil rights charter) from the United Kingdom in 1982. Canada's constitution is the amalgam of acts over this period.

Canada and the United States have generally enjoyed a long history of cooperation. They have worked together in the defense of North America and have strong economic ties. Canada has tried to develop independently of its southern neighbor. But its economy is so closely linked to the U.S. economy that severe U.S. business slumps usually cause hard times in Canada. In addition, the popularity of U.S. culture in Canada has challenged the efforts of Canadian leaders to establish a separate identity for their country.

Though there are many books dealing with the history of individual churches or religious organizations in Canada , some of which will be found listed under their appropriate headings, there is no general history of religious movements in Canada. There are... a number of books dealing with special periods or phases of Canadian religious history which deserve mention. Among these are M. Eastman, Church and state in early Canada (Edinburgh, 1915), J. Croil, Genesis of churches in the United States of America, in Newfoundland and the Dominion of Canada (Montreal, 1907), U. M. Sait, Clerical control in Quebec (Toronto, 1911), W. A. Riddell, The rise of ecclesiastical control in Quebec (New York, 1916), and C. E. Silcox, Catholics, Jews, and Protestants: A study of relationships in the United States and Canada (New York, 1934).

The complete history of neither Canada nor the United States can be studied without reference to the history of the other. Each is today an independent nation. Each... achieved its independence by a completely different path--Canada by gradual constitutional change spread over many years, the United States by a single great War of Independence.

The purpose of these pages is to offer an introduction to the political and cultural history of Canada. It is geared in particular towards those who are interested in the operations of colonial and postcolonial discourse in the literature of both European settlers and the various indigenous cultures. Canada is an interesting, and in many ways paradigmatic, example of the problems facing the modern nation state, with the opposite but parallel movements of a new, youthful culture trying to forge a stable, unified identity, while the native tribes try to retain ancient group identities that are constantly under pressure from the "other Canada".
