Both the church and academia have gotten along successfully without the historical Jesus for centuries. The historical Jesus, the human being who walked the roads of ancient Israel, gathered disciples, and was executed by the Romans, is often contrasted with the "Christ of faith," a supra-historical figure whose presence in the world enlivens and nourishes Christian communities. The latter has always been far more important for most Christians.

If genuine, then the Shroud of Turin is unquestionably the oldest historical [D]ocument pertaining to the life and death of Jesus. If genuine, it is pictorial and forensic evidence that gives credence to the the passion story.

Large amounts of historical data have been obliterated by the religionist conquerors of the past who were convinced that they were serving their god. Entire cultures have been subjugated and destroyed. And yes, cultures were destroying other cultures before and after Xianity. Again, it's human nature to band together in groups and overwhelm/absorb other groups. But when a single group does it for a couple of thousand years, it gets a little irritating.
Three Roman officials, who held stature with emperors as well as with the empire, wrote of Jesus in such a way as to take his historical existence for granted. Their writings appeared at the turn of the century.

How could you prove, for example, the story of Jesus's visiting Mary and Martha? You just have here a story told by a reliable author in a position to know and no reason to doubt the historicity of the story. Theres not much more to say.
Much of what has been transmitted about the historical Jesus comes from writers who did not endorse him. Site provides texts on the social, political, intellectual and cultural climate in which Jesus lived.
