Historical Jesus: Man

Consumer magazines like Rolling Stone once reflected historical links with both a hip counter-culture lifestyle and now flagrantly supports itself with color page advertisements for American Express, luxury autos, Sony Bravia LCD TV, and Jack Daniels. All these pages are seemingly unconsciously stamped with the Madison Avenue mantra "Express Yourself". Never mind. The local marketers must be working overtime to sell the Rolling Stone spirit to China's youth except for a few problems:

What historical facts can be ascertained from the deleted and altered portions of Josephus statement such as those changes made in the Arabic version? (1) Jesus was known as a wise and virtuous man, one recognized for his good conduct. (2) He had many disciples, both Jews and Gentiles. (3) Pilate condemned him to die, (4) with crucifixion explicitly being mentioned as the mode. (5) The disciples reported that Jesus had risen from the dead and (6) that he had appeared to them on the third day after his crucifixion. (7) Consequently, the disciples continued to proclaim his teachings.

By analyzing the historical records, one possible explanation of the events emerges. Jesus, whether because related by blood (via his mother) to the Maccabeans that Jews still revered, or because related to Herod whom Jews feared, claimed to to be the king of the Jews. Some Jews liked him because they recognized his credentials (especially if he was indeed a Maccabean), some Jews despised him as a madman. Eventually, his claims came to the hears of the Romans, as well as his teachings (he was probably a sort of "communist" philosopher, preaching that all humans are equal), and that is what the Romans killed him for. He was probably killed with no trial, just like many other "rebels" of the time that Rome did not deem worthy of any bureaucracy. That is the reason why nobody knows where his tomb is: the Romans did not bother to bury him or return his body.

[Y]ou'd have to grant historical existance to every god and godman. The original gnostic stories don't speak of an actual historic person. The legend as it exist today, is probably a collection of many ideas and stories.

This way of reading the Bible is known as the historical-critical method and is quite different from the literal interpretations of the text performed by most evangelicals. As a scientific approach to the scripture, its purpose is to read between the lines, behind the text, to ascertain what may be the actual, physical circumstance that gave rise to a given saying or story. It is an invaluable tool for rediscovering the historical Jesus as a man of his time.

In addition to the major historical approaches presented in the last chapter, many have attempted to write more-or-less popular lives of Jesus. These authors often advocate unorthodox interpretations: Jesus never died on the cross; he was connected with the Qumran community; someone else changed his message to fit their own desires; he traveled to various parts of the word during the so called "silent years" or even after the crucifixion.
