Historical Jesus: Books
built 290 days ago
Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy, in their book The Jesus Mysteries, explain how the myth and legend of Jesus could easily have arisen without a historical founder. The Jesus story was pressed from the same template as other mythical savior-gods who were killed and resurrected, such as Osiris, Dionysus, Mithra, and Attis.

Sixth, historical Jesus studies have waned significantly in the last ten years. The hey day was the 80s and 90s but the creative work has been done, climaxing perhaps in Tom Wright’s big book, and mostly the conversation has grown stale. What used to attract hundreds to academic sessions now attracts 30 or 40.

This book is an early major study of the Third Quest of the historical Jesus. It focuses on Jesus as a Jew. It emphasizes what Jesus did more than what he said. In particular, it sees the "Cleansing of the Temple" as a key to understanding Jesus as an eschatological prophet who saw himself as God's last messenger before the coming of the kingdom.
