The article presents information about the book "An Historical Geography of the British Colonies," by C.P. Lucas. The story of the West African colonies forms the least creditable chapter in the history of modern times. It is the record, not of victories of civilization over barbarism, of the development of natural resources, of the foundation and upbuilding of states, but of mere mercantile enterprises, in which the principal source of gain for more than two centuries was human lives. These colonies still consist mainly of detached trading settlements in which neither manufacturing, agriculture nor mining is encouraged.

In broad outline, historical geography is concerned with developing a critical understanding of the geographies of the past, and their relations to, and influences on, the geographies of the present. This includes not only appreciating past geographies from the perspective of the present, but ... trying to make sense of how historically situated societies actually imagined, understood, and then lived the human geographies they created. In this intermediate to advanced course, we will draw on a theoretical, metho-dological and empirical literature to explore the historical geographies of exploration and discovery, econ-omic development and landscape change, travel or adventure literature, cartography, settlement and the built landscape, environmental change, and imperialism and colonialism in North America. The course will consist of lectures, audiovisual, in-class presentation and discussion, two field trips, and a term paper assignment.

This is an upper-division, writing-intensive course that presents an overview of current scholarship on the evolving historical geography of the continent. It does this through a set of lectures given by the instructor, through directed readings that will be the basis of class discussion, and centrally through research essays that offer students the opportunity to research, write and argue historical geographies. Research in historical geography is a process of engagement with partial evidence and with secondary material to open windows on aspects of past lives, past economies, and past places.
