Hiroshima was the first city to be destroyed by an atomic bomb on August 6, 1945. Every year millions of people visit the city to pay their respects to this massive destruction at the Peace Memorial Park and its museum. In stark contrast to its horrific past, Hiroshima is presently a city full of pretty rivers, tree-lined boulevards and attractive museums and art galleries. Located at the west end of the Seto Inland Sea, Hiroshima is a gateway for trips to numerous islands (more than 3,000 islands are located in the Seto Inland Sea, part of which are protected by the Inland Sea National Park) including Miyajima which is home to the world famous red shrine gate which guards Itsukushima Shrine.

Hiroshima is a safe and friendly city, so travelers shouldn't have any problems out of the ordinary. The average English level among Hiroshima residents is relatively high for a Japanese city, particularly around the Peace Memorial Park. Directions to the major sights are ... very clearly sign-posted in English throughout the city.

Every year on August 6th the City of Hiroshima holds the Peace Memorial Ceremony to console the souls of those who were lost due to the atomic bombing as well as pray for the realization of everlasting world peace. This ceremony, which is attended by many citizens, including those who lost family members in the bombing, is held in front of the Cenotaph for the A-bomb Victims (Monument for Hiroshima, City of Peace). The Peace Declaration, which is delivered by the Mayor of Hiroshima during the ceremony, is sent to every country in the world ... conveying Hiroshima's wish for the abolition of nuclear weapons and the realization of eternal world peace. In the decades that followed, Hiroshima grew to become the countrys sixth largest city. But at 8.15am on August 6, 1945, the citys growth as a leading military and commercial center came to an abrupt halt. 'Little Boy,' the US atomic bomb carried by the Enola Gay, exploded some 590 meters above the bustling entertainment district near the heart of present-day Hiroshima. The horrific effects of that bomb are well documented and presented at Peace Memorial Park and the Peace Memorial Museum, a must-see lesson in modern history.

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome) was the only structure left standing in the area where the first atomic bomb exploded on 6 August 1945. Ironically, Hiroshima's tragedy is now the city's largest tourist draw, and visitors from around the world come to see Peace Memorial Park with its haunting museum. But Hiroshima, laced with rivers and wide, tree-lined boulevards, boasts other worthwhile attractions as well, including several excellent museums. Hiroshima is ... the most popular gateway for cruises on the Seto Inland Sea and trips to nearby Miyajima, a jewel of an island considered to be one of Japan's most scenic spots.
