Hiragana evolved through the simplification of Chinese characters during the Heian period (794-1185). The symbols they originally came from were being used phonetically, without regard for their meaning, so the writers thought it would be good to have an alphabet that was strictly based on sound. They were eventually simplified by women who wrote letters and literary works. There are 46 hiragana symbols, each having a certain syllable.
